There are reports that two British women have had acid thrown in their faces on the east African island of Zanzibar.

AFP news agency reported that the pair were both working as charity volunteers on the island.

The Foreign Office said it was "aware of an incident" and was "providing consular assistance".

AFP reported that the women were flown to Tanzania for treatment but their injuries were "not life threatening".
