There has been an explosion in the west of Afghanistan's capital, Kabul.

Tolo TV said the blast happened in the Pol-e Sorkh area, while police told the Reuters news agency it was in Karta-e Seh, near the parliament building.

It comes shortly before Nato is due to formally hand over command of combat operations to the local authorities.

President Hamid Karzai and Nato Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen are to take part in the ceremony, the location of which has not been given.

The switch of responsibility for battling the Taliban to the 350,000-strong Afghan National Army is a milestone on the road to the final withdrawal of international combat troops at the end of next year.

Nato's handover of security control started with Bamiyan in 2011.

The final districts to be handed over include 13 in Kandahar province - the birthplace of the Taliban - and 12 each in Nangarhar, Khost and Paktika, all bastions of insurgent activity along the border with Pakistan.
