The deaths of two servicemen in a training exercise on the Brecon Beacons in Powys are being investigated, say Dyfed-Powys Police.
A third man is also in a serious condition in hospital following the incident on Saturday afternoon.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed in a statement that it was working with Dyfed-Powys Police.
The two servicemen's next of kin have been informed.
The MoD said more information would be released in due course but it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.
Police said the coroner has been informed.
