A woman accused of starving and murdering her son has told a court her partner would punish him every day.

Daniel Pelka died in Coventry on 3 March 2012 from severe head injuries.

His mother Magdelena Luczak, 27, and her partner Mariusz Krezolek, 34, both deny murder and causing or allowing the death of a child.

Ms Luczak told Birmingham Crown Court that there were "acts of violence at home" and that Mr Krezolek would punish Daniel and smack him.

The couple have admitted a charge of cruelty.

Ms Luczak told the jury that Mr Krezolek's attitude towards Daniel had been "slowly changing".

She said in October 2011, when he found out Daniel was taking sandwiches from other children at school he "was very angry with him".

She said "he was shouting at him, smacking him on the bottom".

'Had enough'

He would give Daniel punishments almost every day, including making him kneel in a corner, do squats or run around, she said.

Asked by defence barrister Stephen Linehan QC what she did about the punishments, she said: "Daniel didn't listen to me. So at first I thought it was good that Mariusz was stopping him taking the sandwiches."

When asked how she felt as the punishments continued, she said: "Later, I had enough."

Ms Luczak said at the beginning of her relationship with Mr Krezolek, he had treated both her and her son "very, very well".

She told the court the relationship changed and he would become violent at home.

She said that Mr Krezolek had strangled her.

Ms Luczak told the court that on the night Daniel broke his arm, she was working at Parcel Force and received a text from Mr Krezolek which said "Daniel has had an accident he fell from the sofa".

The trial continues.
