Supporters of Egypt's deposed President Mohammed Morsi say security forces have begun an operation to clear two protest camps in the capital, Cairo.

The BBC's James Reynolds says an armoured bulldozer is heading towards the sit-in outside the Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque, in the east of the city.

Police have also cut off side streets and there have been bursts of gunfire.

Protesters have been camped outside the mosque, and at Nahda Square to the west, for the past six weeks.

They have been demanding the reinstatement of Mr Morsi, who was deposed by the military on 3 July following mass opposition protests.

More than 250 people have been killed in clashes since then.

On Tuesday, one person was killed in a confrontation between supporters and opponents of Mr Morsi in Giza after people marched from Nahda Square to a nearby complex of government buildings to protest against the appointment of several military officers as provincial governors.
