Death sparks cyber-blackmail probe

Source BBC News@ tienganhvui.com

Police in Fife are investigating claims that a teenage boy killed himself because he was being blackmailed on the internet.

It is thought the 17-year-old had become involved in a web scam where victims are befriended and then lured into taking sexual videos and images of themselves.

These are then used to blackmail the person involved.

The boy, from West Fife, died on 15 July.

The blackmailers often pose as teenage girls.

He was described as appearing happy and close to his family who were said to be unaware that he was being targeted online.

It is understood he was sent a message which warned that his life would not be worth living unless he paid money into a named account.

The blackmailers threatened that images would be sent to his friends and family.

The teenager is believed to have taken his own life less than an hour after replying to the message on his laptop.

His mother has said that she wants to raise awareness of the dangers of internet blackmail.

Police Scotland confirmed that the case was being investigated.

A spokesman said the force took any reported threats of cyber-bullying seriously and urged anyone who feared they were being targeted to contact them.
