Hamzah Khan's mother Amanda Hutton denies the charge of manslaughter
A woman accused of the manslaughter of her son, whose body was found in a cot almost two years after his death, has told a court he was a "fussy eater".
Four-year-old Hamzah Khan was found mummified in Bradford in September 2011 following his death in December 2009.
Amanda Hutton, 43, told Bradford Crown Court she thought he would "grow out of" his difficulties with food.
She denies manslaughter but has admitted child neglect and preventing the lawful burial of a body.
Violent relationship
Hutton said another son, Qaiser, who is now an adult, also went through a stage when he got thin as a youngster.
Hutton said Hamzah, who was born in 2005, was still having problems with eating in 2008.
Stephen Meadowcroft QC, defending, asked her if she was "worried at all".
She said: "No, I wasn't because Qaiser had been the same and he'd grown out of it.
The court has heard Hamzah Khan was found dressed in clothes for a six to nine-month-old baby
"So I just thought he would grow out of it."
The defendant told the court about her relationship with Hamzah's father, Aftab Khan, which began when she was 16 or 17.
Hutton said he was violent towards her.
"There were good times, there were bad times," she said.
Asked by Mr Meadowcroft why she stayed with Mr Khan, she said: "Because I loved him."
The jury has previously heard Hutton and Mr Khan's relationship ended after he was charged with assaulting her in 2008.
'Rotten food'
Earlier, Paul Greaney QC, prosecuting, told the court there was so much rubbish in the kitchen when police entered Hutton's home in September 2011 that the freezer was difficult to open.
Mr Greaney said officers examined the kitchen fridge and the "top portion... contained only rotten food".
"The bottom shelf contained a mixture of ready-prepared food - ready meals - all with an expiry date of March 2011," he said.
"All of them were five months out of date.
"Mould was visible on most foodstuffs and on the doors of the fridge."
He said the oven contained a take-away box and a rotting pizza slice was inside it.
Mr Greaney read out formal admissions put before the jury of eight men and four women before the prosecution closed its case and Hutton took to the witness box.
The court has heard Hutton admitted child neglect and preventing the legal burial of a body in July.
Her son Tariq Khan, 24, also pleaded guilty to preventing the lawful and proper burial of Hamzah's corpse.
The trial continues.
