Police investigating the disappearance of a Glasgow teenager say a body recovered from the sea in south Wales is that of missing Hollie McClymont.

The 14-year-old was last seen in difficulties in the water at the resort of Barry Island on Sunday.

Her body was recovered from the sea at Fontygary, near Rhoose, in the Vale of Glamorgan on Wednesday afternoon.

Hollie's parents have been told, said police.

Ch Insp Marc Lamerton said: "Our thoughts are with Hollie's family at this difficult time.

"I would like to thank the community of Barry and the media for their support throughout this incident."

Hollie had been on holiday with her family, including her mother Sarah, when she went missing.

Police said the family chose Barry Island because they have relatives living in the area.

Steffan Wiliam, a Barry resident and Plaid Cymru councillor at the local Vale of Glamorgan Council, said the discovery of her body was "awful, awful news - the nightmare scenario we have all been worrying about".

"Our thoughts go out to the family at this awful time. The pain and grief they must be feeling now is terrible."

Fontygary is a small seaside village three miles (4.8km) south-west of Barry with a small stony beach and a holiday and leisure park nearby.

Police leaflets

Coastguards led an extensive air and sea search off Whitmore Bay on Sunday.

The search resumed on Monday involving Barry and Penarth coastguard teams, police officers and the force helicopter.

But on Monday evening Swansea Coastguard confirmed it had concluded its search.

South Wales Police said the last sighting of Hollie was in the sea at around 14:45 BST on Sunday in the part of the bay nearest the Island Leisure Amusement arcade, Western Shelter.

Police handed out leaflets about Hollie to holidaymakers and also carried out house-to-house inquiries in Barry.

After Hollie disappeared her cousin Shannon said: "You never ever think something like this will happen to someone in your family."
