Network equipment giant Cisco has announced plans to lay off 4,000 workers, despite reporting stronger than expected earnings.

Cisco reported net income of $2.3bn (£1.50bn) in the fourth quarter, up from $1.9bn a year earlier.

"My confidence in our ability to be the #1 IT company is increasing," said boss John Chambers in a statement.

Nonetheless, the company said it would trim its workforce and take a restructuring charge.

Its shares were down 10% in after-hours trading.

Cisco - which is the world's largest manufacturer of network technology equipment - is often seen as a bellwether for other technology companies, many of whom rely on its products.

Recent technology earnings have been mixed, with Apple beating expectations but results from other companies such as Google, IBM and Microsoft not as strong.
