Two people have reportedly died as a UPS cargo plane crashed near an airport in Birmingham, Alabama.

Birmingham Mayor William Bell told US media the pilot and co-pilot were killed in the incident. UPS said they were the only crew aboard.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the A300 plane crashed on approach to the airport before dawn Wednesday.

Officials say the aircraft went down in a grassy field near Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.

No-one else was hurt in the incident, said officials.

It is not clear what caused the plane, which had been en route from Louisville, Kentucky, to crash.
