Four Britons are among those killed in an attack by militants on a shopping centre in Kenya, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said next of kin had been informed. He also said the UK "stands ready" to provide more assistance to Kenya.

At least 69 people have been killed since the attack began on Saturday.

Prime Minister David Cameron is cutting short a visit to Balmoral to chair an emergency meeting this afternoon.

Mr Hammond chaired a meeting of Cobra, the government's emergency response committee, on Monday morning. This was the third meeting of the group about the attack on the shopping mall in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

Between 10 and 15 attackers are still inside the Westgate shopping centre.

Heavy gunfire and explosions have been heard on Monday, and smoke is now billowing out of the top of the building.
