Spare bedroom chargePeople with unused spare bedrooms face a cut in their housing benefit

A UK Labour government would abolish the spare room subsidy, the party's Scottish welfare spokeswoman has said.

Jackie Baillie told BBC Radio Scotland an announcement on the issue would be made soon.

Labour's policy on cuts to housing benefit for people with unused spare rooms has not yet been clearly set out.

Ms Baillie's comments came ahead of two rallies in Glasgow against the new subsidy, which critics have labelled the "bedroom tax".

Speaking on the Good Morning Scotland programme, she said: "We are very clear. Labour rejected this approach when it was put to them in government, for social landlords. We have campaigned for its abolition.

"Yes we will abolish it. My understanding is that you can expect an announcement relatively soon."

Earlier this week the Scottish government announced £20m as part of its budget statement to support those struggling with UK-wide housing benefit changes.

Finance Secretary John Swinney also said £68m would be invested in each of the next two years to "limit the damage of Westminster's welfare cuts".

The Bin the Bedroom Tax Coalition has planned two demonstrations in Glasgow on Saturday, one which will coincide with the Liberal Democrat conference taking place at the city's Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre.

The demo will call on Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, and other Liberal Democrat MPs, to withdraw their support for the spare room subsidy.

Mr Clegg has previously admitted there is a problem with the policy, but insisted additional funding had been made available to help the most vulnerable, such as the disabled and their carers.
