More than 100 vehicles have been involved in a crash in the A249 Sheppey crossing in Kent, police have said.

Emergency teams were called to the crossing at about 07:15 BST, Kent Police said.

Early reports suggested up to 40 vehicles were involved, but police later said more than 100 had crashed.

It is not yet known how many people are injured. Nine ambulances and six fire engines are at the scene.

BBC Travel said the incident happened in thick fog and traffic was being diverted via the old Sheppey crossing.

One witness said visibility was very poor but drivers were approaching the crossing with no lights.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the crossing, which connects the Isle of Sheppey with mainland Kent.

The £100m four-lane crossing opened in 2006.
