The funeral of renowned poet Seamus Heaney will take place on Monday in the Republic of Ireland.

The service for the Nobel Laureate will be led by Father Kevin Doran at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Donnybrook, Dublin.

It will followed by burial in his native Bellaghy in County Londonderry in Northern Ireland.

Heaney, acclaimed by many as the best Irish poet since WB Yeats, died on Friday aged 74.

More than 1,000 people were at the church in Donnybrook, where the poet's remains were brought on Sunday night.

His widow, Marie, led mourners at the hour-long service.

Catholic Archbishop of Dublin Dr Diarmuid Martin paid tribute to the poet.

'Graciousness'

He said he was a "great man, always a man of kindness".

"Greatness and graciousness belonged together in him," he said.

Irish government ministers and leading figures from the arts were also at the service.

BBC NI Dublin correspondent Shane Harrison said: "While the world of the arts has been mourning the death of Seamus Heaney the poet, his family are the ones who have most deeply felt the loss.

"And they were in the thoughts and prayers of those concelebrating at the removal."

Books of condolences are being opened in Belfast and Dublin. A book of condolence opened at the Guildhall in Derry on Saturday.

A celebration of the poet's life in Belfast's Lyric theatre on Saturday night was packed to capacity as the audience was treated to poignant recitals of his best-known works.

Heaney was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995 "for works of lyrical beauty and ethical depth, which exalt everyday miracles and the living past".

Over his long career he was awarded numerous prizes and received many honours for his work.

Heaney recently suffered from ill health.

His 2010 poetry collection The Human Chain was written after he suffered a stroke, and the central poem, Miracle, was directly inspired by his illness.

Mr Heaney is survived by his three children Christopher, Michael and Catherine Ann.
