Hamzah Khan's body was found in a cot in his mother's bedroom, the court heard
A woman accused of starving her four-year-old son to death smelt of alcohol and was often drunk and tearful, a neighbour has told a jury.
Hamzah Khan's mummified body was found in his mother Amanda Hutton's bedroom nearly two years after he had died.
Christine Latz told Bradford Crown Court Ms Hutton moved to her street in Bradford before Hamzah's death and said she had left an abusive relationship.
Ms Hutton, 43, denies manslaughter. She claimed Hamzah died of natural causes.
Asked whether there was any "common feature" she noticed about Hutton, Mrs Latz told the court: "She just smelt of alcohol. She appeared to be drunk quite often, tearful.
"She told me she'd come out of an abusive relationship to make a fresh start down here."
Prosecutors have told the jury that Hamzah died in December 2009 because he was starved to death. His body was found in September 2011.
The trial continues.
